Grandfather Mountain: Hiking to North Carolina’s Swinging Bridge
Grandfather Mountain, near the Blue Ridge Parkway, is one of North Carolina’s most memorable outdoor destinations. Its famous Swinging Bridge, mountain views, and variety of trails make it a worthwhile stop for hikers and sightseers alike.
We stayed overnight in Banner Elk, a charming mountain town about 15 minutes from the park entrance. Banner Elk has small shops, coffeehouses, and restaurants, making it a convenient home base.
A Comfortable Evening in Banner Elk
Before heading to the mountain to scope out the entrance, we stopped at one of the town’s coffee shops. Later, since it was my birthday, we had dinner at Pedalin’ Pig BBQ.
I grew up in Montana and this plate is from my hometown county — 25T
I love an occasional elegant meal, but this Montana girl will usually choose local comfort food and a relaxed atmosphere. We enjoy smoking meat on our Traeger, so we are always interested in new techniques, sauces, and good barbecue.
I ordered the two-meat plate with ribs and brisket, along with baked beans and potato salad. The ribs were tender, and the brisket was flavorful and wonderfully soft. A little jalapeño barbecue sauce made the meal even better. I paired it with a fruity Pinot Noir for a memorable birthday dinner.
Start Early and Reserve Your Entrance
The next morning was cool, around 45 degrees, with low clouds floating just above the treetops. We picked up coffee and breakfast sandwiches before leaving town.
Grandfather Mountain strongly recommends purchasing an entrance reservation in advance. Based on our experience, I would consider this essential, especially during busy travel periods.
Our reservation was for 9:00 a.m. We arrived at 8:45 and found two lanes of cars waiting for the gates to open.
Once inside, we headed toward the Bridge Trail parking area. Rangers were available with maps, water, and advice about current trail conditions.
If someone in your group cannot manage a hike or stairs, the upper parking area provides easier access to the Top Shop and an elevator to the bridge level.
Hiking the Bridge Trail
We began at the lower Black Rock parking area and followed the Bridge Trail uphill toward the upper parking area. The trail is approximately 0.4 miles and has a gradual incline through the trees.

I love a great tree
Although it is not a long hike, the uphill walk may be challenging for some visitors. Take your time, especially if you are adjusting to the elevation.
At the upper parking area, about 20 stairs lead to the famous Swinging Bridge. The bridge is 228 feet long and spans an 80-foot gorge at an elevation of approximately 5,282 feet.

The bridge beckons you to cross
The bridge did not swing as much as I expected, even with several people crossing at the same time. The views, however, were spectacular. From the bridge and surrounding overlooks, you can enjoy sweeping views toward Linville Peak, which rises to about 5,305 feet.

Temperatures can be noticeably cooler at the summit. Even on a mild day, wind can make the bridge area feel chilly, so bring a jacket or extra layer.

Looking the other direction
After crossing the bridge, we stopped at the trail map. Visitors taking the trails must complete a free permit with their name, vehicle information, and planned route.
We opted for the Red Diamond trail

This system helps park staff keep track of hikers, particularly when weather changes or the park is nearing closing time. Be sure to return or complete the permit as directed by park staff.
Grandfather Loop Trail
We chose the red-diamond, moderate-rated Grandfather Loop Trail, which eventually returned us to the parking area. It gave us a chance to see more of the mountain and add some hiking miles to our day.
This trail is more challenging than the Bridge Trail. Some sections include large boulders, climbing cables, and uneven terrain. Hiking poles or walking sticks would be helpful, particularly for balance and stability.
Large boulders offer multiple shelves for shade
The trail can also become slippery after rain. Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction and allow extra time for the more technical sections. There are a two sections of cables to assist with navigating the slopes.

I’d like to think a critter lives here
We decided not to hike the strenuous Grandfather Trail. Rangers explained that it included ladders, hand-over-hand climbing, and additional cables. Because the previous day had been rainy and we had not brought our more rugged hiking gear, we felt that skipping it was the right choice.
Instead, we added the Black Rock Trail to Grandmother Overlook. It was another moderate hike and well worth the extra effort.

Final Thoughts
Grandfather Mountain offers something for nearly every visitor. You can drive close to the Swinging Bridge, take the shorter Bridge Trail, or spend several hours exploring more challenging mountain trails.
For us, the combination of cool mountain air, dramatic views, and the opportunity to hike at our own pace made the visit especially memorable. Whether you are an experienced hiker or prefer a shorter walk with plenty of scenic stops, Grandfather Mountain is well worth adding to your North Carolina itinerary.
If you have time halfway down the mountain is the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery. Great interactive science options for kids. There is a casual grill inside, Mildred’s Grill, for a quick bite before or after hiking.
